Monsters! Our parents used them to keep us from getting out of bed in the middle of the night. Eventually, the myths wore off (although some of you still jump at shadows or have a CareBear nightlight-no shame) but the ideas of monsters stays with us. The question I pose to you is "what is a monster?" How are they different than heroes? Do they only exist in fables and movies? Think before you type.

ReplyDeleteA monster can be anything that you are scared of or form of ur imaginitive mind. I personally dont believe in monsters unless there is a nuclear mutation then yes I do believe there are monsters that are out to kill anything. Monsters do not think they just have instinct while heroes have think about the sitiuation before they can save civilians. Yes mostly i do believe they are in the movies and fables unless u count dinosaurs as monsters
SCOTT THOMAS NICHOLSON,
ReplyDeleteA monster can something like the boogie man to something like a tyrant like Hitler. Its basically anything that uses either force of FEAR to get what they want. They do the wrong things and are negative figures. I guess they aren't always bad tho. like the one in the above picture. I think the monster just really really wants to play with blocks and the little girl is a selfish little punk. so who's the monster in your eyes?
Lindsay Crum
ReplyDeleteA monster to me is creature that always scares people. Although they aren't real, i still get paranoid that ones going to get me. My brother's always scared me with scare masks and made me believe monsters were real. Even though I think that we still believe in the thought of them. I think a monster is a figment of our imagination. They are nothing like hero's because they scare people not save them.
Deidra Tilghman
ReplyDeleteA monster i guess could be anything or anyone that frightens someone. For little kids it might be the bogeyman or something hiding under their bed.I can say that there are monsters that i fear.A rapist or a murderer could be a monster in reality, a person that you don't want to ever meet, someone who you fear.Your parents might fear monsters like the bill collectors.lol..ha ha i'm just saying i think a monster could be saw in so many different ways.
Cari Hopson
ReplyDeleteA monster is something that lives under beds and dark places where no one is and they come out only at night. Monsters are different than heros because usually the hero saves a person from the monster. Monsters are always bad and scary. And a hero doesnt hide like a monster people always see the hero save someone.
Thamytra Smith
ReplyDeleteMonsters are scary! People arent inspired by monsters like people are to heroes. Monsters dont only exist in stories and fables, they are real life monsters such as rapists, sex offenders and murderers who people are afraid to be around.
MEGAN (OLGA) SEARS
ReplyDeleteA monster is an ugly, scary creature. Much like los gatos de Senora Price. Monsters do the opposite of hereos instead of saving you they are putting you in harm. Like when los gatos de Senora Price eat you. Monsters are in movies and they are also real. In the movie Monsters Inc. it shows that some monsters are good, but that is false. There is no such thing as a good monster unless your name is Justin Koper.
Emma Anderson
ReplyDeleteMonsters are simply embodiments of the unknown and of our fears. Houses and closets said to be inhabited by monsters are generally just places that people are too afraid to explore themselves, so they fabricate a story to justify their fear. Monsters in fictional stories often have some relevance to a common fear of the society to which its presented. So I guess they only physically exist in fiction, but their abstract basis is very real in our world. I actually believe that monsters are heroic because they may seem menacing, but usually prove easily beaten in both fiction and reality. Sometimes fighting your own monsters has much greater benefits than someone defeating them for you. For example, many people characterize addiction as a monster. Only you can defeat this monster-- no Spiderman or firefighter is going to cure your disease. So while their intentions differ from that of heroes, I believe they provide greater salvation in the long term if you choose to overcome.
Bryan Miller, Pd. 6
ReplyDeletemonsters are simply figments of our imagination created to scare us. they are not real and can not be compared to real people. people are called monsters for things they do, but that does not mean monsters are real. they are just creatures that exist in fabled stories.

A monster is something that gives everyone fears. A reason to not attempt a task. A monster doesnt always have to be a person. It can be something inside somebody. Maybe an inner voice or something telling a person not to try because of the possibility of failure. Any monster in any story can be defeated.

ReplyDeleteA monster is something that causes someone to be afraid and can't do things they would normally do. Monsters range from giant, ugly guys(ex. Alien, Predator, Venom, etc) to people that are completly psychotic(Michael Myers from Halloween 2, Jason, Freddy). Monsters are usually the bad guy, but they can also be the good guy as seen in Monsters Inc.

ReplyDeleteMonsters come from the fears of our minds or the unknow. Like jordan difatta is scared of the monster under his bed still so, he sleeps with a night light. Monsters differ from heros because they do evil things like scare kids and take socks and hide them so you can't find them every again. I'm pretty sure monseters aren't real and are just a tool kids use to pick on wimpy kids or your older brother or sister say to play with you.
PERIOD 5. JEALOUS RIGHT??
ReplyDeleteA monster can be anyone that instills fear in you. Even the little baby-boy bully in your gym class is a monster if he makes you scared. They are evil and molicious in nature, and try and scare weaker kids. They're ust the opposite of heroes because all they do is pick on the weaker, smaller, and helpless people. Monsters aren't just in our imagination. Theyre all around the world around us.

ReplyDeleteA monster is the physical immage of ones fears and disgusts. It is ment to be evil and cruel but at the same time maybe just misunderstood by everyone else. A monster could be the evil dragon or boogie man that eats and kills men or children, or the green ogre that just wants to be alon, "shrek".
Stephen Gedridge
ReplyDeleteA monster is someones fears. They take there biggest fears and convert it into a monster. The monster is different from a hero because they try to scare people instead of saving someone. Not trying to kill inoccent people like monsters. There are some monsters in this world. Even though he isnt scary looking but Hitler. He is a monster for killing inoccent people.
Tina Spedden
ReplyDeleteA monster is a creature that lives either under your bed or in your dark closet! They are something you would never want to run into. They are just something you are afraid of. Heros are someone you could look up to and would never hurt you. Many people would agree that a hero is a good jolly person you would love to eat dinenr with. Unlike a monster they are not everyone's favorite. Monsters are bad and Heros are good. I still sleep with a night light on to keep the monsters away!!

ReplyDeleteA monster can be almost anything that you fear. If there is something that scares you, or makes you afraid then it could be considered a monster. A monster doesn't have to be an object or person either. If you want, you can say that a monster is something like height or the dark. In most cases there isn't much that you can do to overcome a monster. I guess Superman might be able to help you out, but i don't think he can get rid of your fear of heights.
Elizabeth Lowery
ReplyDeletea monster is anything or anyone that you are afraid of. It can be a dog, a shadow or a bully. To be a monster the thing has to make you scream or get cold chills. Something or someone is most definately a monster when you hear its name and you shiver or go "ahhhhh!"
A monster is an extreme, out of the ordinary creature that shows him/herself as scary. Yes, they are much different than heroes because heroes are typically the good guys. There is a considerate amount of potential these furry or spiky guys (yay! Monsters Inc.!) Possess. They may visibly be shown as monsters but what really is the monster is how they act. For instance, a human can be a monster. Someone who kills others for fun steals money as a hobby and tickles little kids in the dark until they end up crying and gives outsiders the wrong idea. Monsters are usually unwanted things, but hey, they are just misjudged by the outside world...how would you feel?? 'We don't like your kind!' Just basing our opinion on what we do know rather than keeping an open mind! How ignorant of us all! 'Cmere fluffy!' Wow Monsters can be cute. Remember that show on nickelodeon? 'Ah scary monsters!' Haha good times, good times.

Monster's can be whatever your fear inspires. It doesn't have to be an animal, a human, or a beast. Monsters can be ideas, or nightmares that torture you in your sleep. Diseases and sickness are monsters, killing off people one by one.
Monsters differ from heroes because instead of inflicting hope, they inflict pain and suffering.
No, they are real and they surround us everyday. Diseases, cancer, murderers, rapists, night terrors, SPIDERS, among many other things in this world are monsters.
The only question there is:
Which one are you most afraid of, what kind of monster scares you?
A monster is not just the boogeyman or Sulley, from Monsters Inc. It could be something you fear like a bug or the dark. People in general could be monsters. People like rapists or abusers could be considered monsters. A monster doesn't always have to be referred to as an imaginary creature, it could be anything that makes you feel afraid or resentful. Monsters are no fun! ha.

ReplyDeleteA monster is a character that instills fear, usually in children, and prevents them from doing something they want to do. Specifically, i think every kid had their own monster when they were little, unless the kid was a sociopath ofcourse. For me, i thought there was a monster in the toilet that was gonna grab my butt =/.
Hero's on the other hand have a much more positive connotation, usually protecting people from their "monsters".
Jessica McCarter
ReplyDeleteA monster is something that brings out fear, and it doesnt even have to be real. For example, the mysterious object in the corner of your room may seem monster like, but once you turn on the lights, its just a coat on a hanger(or is it?). They are different from heros because monsters instill fear and are out to get us while heros make us feel safe. Monsters do not only exist in stories. Someone could say a rapist or a serial killer is a monster and it wouls be true because a monster is someone or something that brings out fear.
Tom Volpe

A monster can come from any type of fear. For some it could be a serial killer or a crazed and demented deer, or others it could be a tiny spider, that probably won't come after you. Real monsters however, the ones that do as they please regardless of others. It's the fear of not knowing what is going to happen next. If you know a serial killer is going to come into your house at midnight, and you know where exactly he is going to be, then your could just wait at that point and surpise him with an attack of your own. Fear is a bad kind of surprise, and monsters are the deliverers of the bad surprises.
Robbie Price
ReplyDeleteA monster is someone, or something that instills fear into those who perceive it. It can be anything from a spider, to that creepy old guy down the street. Just like with a hero, a monster is all about perception. There are those, like my sister, who are completely terrified of spiders, and then others, like myself, who don't bat an eye at them.
i hate you price- julia
ReplyDeleteA monster is a creature made up or real that is indiscriminate in what it does wether killing people to punching babies to rape
i think that a monster is a face of fear.Monsters scare us and hold us back from doing what we want, but not always are monsters bad.I think that people creat monsters, if something scares them then it is a monster. so do we make what we call monsters?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion a monster is something that is feared and it knows it’s feared. And they use that fear to scare and/or hurt people. A monster can have a wide range from fake creatures that exists in our minds to murderers that are really out there in the world.

A monster to me is like a warning, something anybody in this world can turn into if there not carefull, respectfull and follow the rules given to them. I say this because monsters are seen as hideous ugly creatures, things to be feared, unloveable. They dont follow the rules or even think about anybody else so they must be cast out of society. In many ways they are similar to criminals. Are they real, no they are symbols. And no there not like heroes totally oppisite, heroes live for others there people we look up to. While monsters are seen as the scum of the earth.
Tyler McCaffery
ReplyDeleteA monster can be any living or an imaginary thing that envokes fear into someone. The monster may or may not be something that can harm you. For example a garden snake or a wolf spider are completly harmless but can still be a monster to some people. What a monster is really depends on your prespective.
Monsters arent real. They were just made up by your parents and older syblings to scare you. The only reason your parents told you there were monsters under the bed was to keep you there all night so they could have some time without you. The only real monster these days are those energy drinks, that the skater punks drink way to much of because they think its cool. well dyeing at the age of 30 with heart problems is not cool. and those arent ever real. they are cemicals and ceffine.
ReplyDeleteSamantha Gray
ReplyDeleteFirst of all Eric, i'm not a skater punk! And i love energy drinks especially Monster. I feel that is an unfair judgement of people who like caffine WAY too much. Like me!
I think a monster is NOT what we were trained as children to think it is, like the boogie man or mysterious creeper under our beds. Monsters are anything you are afraid.
Mary Rogers, First Period
ReplyDeleteI'll have to agree with Emma A., as well.
A monster represents something we generally fear or dislike. But, a monster is not always a monster by just its looks. Monsters Inc. is a good (and pretty funny) example of how one shouldn't always judge a book by its cover. Even though we may know that saying, sometimes the instinctive fear of what that "monster" overpower our logic. Hence, we fight, scorn, and/or destroy it.
It doesn't even have to be a monster physically. People can very well be far worse monsters than you know. Discrimination is one example, predjustice is another. Just who is the real monster there, the attacker or the victim?
But regardless of physical differences, people can really be intimidating and horrible, as villains in your average stories can prove. Twisted motives, twisted morals...things that aren't like you, things that you don't want to get even close to or that you want to eliminate from your universe as soon as possible.
It can all be up to you what a monster is, whether it's because of physical differences (human or animal) or mental differences, or something that isn't even alive. But don't let yourself become the monster in order to overcome it; you can find your own strength to do so, and when you conquer it, you'll find that you're far better than you were before.
I personally feel a monster is one who hurts someone or something cruelly without a shred of mercy, reason, or regret, and continues to do so in the same manner.
Oi, this turned out to be really long. I just got so into that I lost track of...length.lol Sorry!
Mary Rogers, First Period
ReplyDeleteOops, I made a few mistakes. Shame on me for not proof-reading!
"Predjustice" should be "prejudice".
And fixed a sentence: "Even though we may know that saying, sometimes the instinctive fear of what that "monster" might do overpowers our logic."
A monster is scary, its a freak & its mostly an imaginary creature.its scares people, doesn't help people in any way. A monster has a different look & a different behior, its a cruel creature, & can often look disfigured & have different animal parts or humans parts or anything. Its abnormal!
ReplyDeleteCasey Tibbs
ReplyDeleteMonsters are things that scare the crap out of people! They can be creatures made up but yet people are scared silly from the idea of monsters. I think there are real monsters in this world. It does not have to be a big hairy ugly thing. It could be anything that you would be afaid of. Like for me its bugs. They terrify me. So instead of looking under the bed for monsters i look under the bed for bugs!
Emma Tomalewski
ReplyDeleteMonsters are usually a figment of our imagination, the things we make up to fear when we’re kids. But what’s really a “monster”? To little kids it might be a boogieman under the bed or in the closet. But when you grow older a “monster” to you could be a murderer or a rapist. Monsters are different from heroes because monsters are usually what the heroes are fighting to save the day.
Greg King,
ReplyDeleteMonsters. When little kids think of this images of the Boogie Man and Zombies appear, which is the result of parents nonchalant use of power to strike fear in a child's mind. So in this case, a parent uses their power of mind to get their way, inclusive of going to bed and not messing around at night. And since, there is no concrete image and information on these creatures, the mystery invokes more of a stake in the child's subconscious.
On the other hand, monsters, such as terrorists, exist and strike fear in the mind of adults because the average person could turn on CNN or MSNBC and come across real images of real people dying. This monster IS REAL and IT IS REALLY SCARY, well to those who are afraid of dying and all that fun stuff.
The last part of the question was how are they different that heroes, well that's easy they can kill, and most heroes don't.
Thomas Bernier
ReplyDeleteThe only monsters to exist in this world are those constructed by human thought. Other than in fiction, monsters have no physical form. They are what man creates out of his fears and uncertainties. Like how a small child with a fear of the dark could create a monster out of his dark closet. Or how a middle-aged man, with a fear of death and uncertainty of what lies beyond the realm of the living, could see death as a monster. The main difference between a hero and a monster is a hero is what comes to remove fear and doubt. The monster is all that fear and doubt, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. A monster forces a person to either face or avoid what stands in their way. This helps shape who they are as a person, whether they grow as a person or they regress. The hero, on the other hand, causes temporary alleviation but very rarely solves the person's problem in the long run.
Justin Handley pd. 1
ReplyDeleteTo me a monster is anything or anyone that instills fear in us. It could be as little as something you believe is hiding in your closet to get you or as big as an actuall paerson who hurts you physically or mentally. Monsters differ from heroes in the fact that they tend to scare you, harm you, or just make you feel uneasy and a hero usually comforts you and makes you feel quite safe. Monsters do not only exist in movies or fables either becuase i beleive we all have some sort of monster that we fear whether we choose to admit it or not.

a monster could be almost anything that creates chaos or fear. when your little you think of the monsters in the closet or under the bed that make you scared and hide under your blankies at night. But when you get older you think of monsters as completely different things. A monster doesnt have to be something that jumps out and scares you or terrorizes the whole city, it could be the bully in school who beats everyone up for their lunch money Or someone or thing who actually does make everyone fear for some reason or another like a murderer or an epidemic. a monster is something that shouldnt have a set defenition because there isnt only one way to describe it.

ReplyDeleteI bleieve a monster is anything that acts without a moral code, anything that can do something wrong and have no remorse, anything that is incapable of feeling love, and anything that acts wihtout any compassion. this means that anything and anyone can be a monster. Also a monster is anything that causes unreasonable fear.
kinda like a hero, a monster can be anyone or even anything. Monsters are normally our biggest fears. So everyone has different "monsters" in their life. Some are big and some are small. But we can always ovecome them. Just like in the movies when the monster is beaten by the good guy.
ReplyDeleteI looked up the definition of monster and found that it can range from an abnormally born baby to a creature who inspires horror and disgust. People usually think monsters are evil and are out to hurt people. Though some do hurt people, they usually have a motive behind it, so it really isnt all their fault. Think of Ted Bundy. He killed all of those girls because he was lied to all his life and was betrayed by his own mother, so he killed girls that looked like his mother. If you think about it a monster is pretty much just a broken hero. Monsters don't only reside in fairy tales and movies, but in real life to, because everyone gets hurt in their lives. Some people just don't know how to deal with pain as well as others which then makes them look like monsters.
ReplyDeleteTori Leitch
ReplyDeleteA monster can be anything its something in your imagination that frightens you. Everything frightens me from a noise to a shirt in the closet, but especially when you let your mind wonder. Monsters and Super heros are exactly the same just one is scary and the other is not so much, but both come from your imagination.
A monster to me is not what we thought it was as little kids. its much more than that. it is anything that you fear. from something small to something huge, something really serious to something that you just worry too much about. we all have parsonal issues that instill some sort of fear in us which in turn means we all have our owmn little monsters that we deal with all the time.

ReplyDeleteA monster is someone or something corrupt. For example when batman started to almost kill joker he was turning into a monster this is because he was going agianst his own moral code due to anger. Even though at first thought it seems like him killing joker would be a good idea, but then when you see Batman acting out in a way agianst his moral code you feel kinda wierd and you almost start to view him differently.

ReplyDeleteWhen I was little I was afraid of "the man in the closet." I was never able to sleep until either me of my mother would check to make sure no one was there. Basically I was afraid of the unknown. If i didn't check my mind would start playing tricks on me makingm me get convinced that a monster would jump out and get me. Monsters provokes fear and is thought of as a horrible being in the minds of many. I believe a monster could be anyone who doesn't care about anything or one, who finds joy in bringing fear to others and (me personally)is surrounded my pure mystery and unknown.

ReplyDeleteWell... obviously can't match the intensity of Mary Rogers or Emma Anderson's blogs. This is probably what a monster is. People that take glory away from other people. Like when people write really long blogs so that other people that originally started the trend can't get street cred for writing long anymore. I'm pretty sure this is one of my child nightmares' comming true. This and the other one when ...
I was just a little boy growing up on the streets. I was probably about two years old and I would sleep on the cement in my babysitters backyard and us rocks as pillows. It was that night that I had a horrible nightmare.
Paper was flying everywhere. Oh no! It was Paperstorious (meaning story made from paper) which frankly wasn't a very scary monster but it deffinately made me wet the cement a few times. Anyway ... this monster was deffinetely real and usually came out of my mind in school. As soon as I was done writing a story on the paper, Paperstorious would come out of nowhere and correct my grammar and spelling. It made me so mad that sometimes I would just pee right infront of everyone to prove a point. Therefore monsters do exist and people are mean for laughing at me in second grade. They just don't understand.

Justin David Handley is the definition of a monster in my opinion. Webster's brilliant, expanded edition of the dictionary describes a monster as one who displays characteristics such as cruelity, wickedness, and inhumanity. Well after studying such topics, I have come to find that Mr.Handley portrays all of these characteristics quite frequently. To make a long story short, "I" came to "HIS" house for dinner last night, and he made "ME" put the dishes away. What a cruel, wicked, and inhumane JERK! Pretty much a monster IMO (;.

ReplyDeleteA monster is the inner self contradictions. We are our own monsters. They are those that attack the weak and are vultures of society. We all have the unfortunate inner monster of ourselves. In this case i speak of is that no matter who we are, we have something that we push towards people, making us look bad towards others. With this, monsters arent just in movies, they are everywhere. No matter where we are, we have a negativity about us. That is what a monster is.

I think that a monster is something the troubles you. It doesnt necesarily have to be a physical person or thing it can be a situtation that makes you nervouse or something like that. We all have our monsters in life, public speaking, homework(me), or that kid lochlan that sits next to me in englis(he is a creeper). So wherther it be the boogy man or a personal fear monsters show up everywhere.
i think a monster is something that scares you something that makes you weaker or something that makes you not feel like your normal self. i also believe that you yourself could be a monster. a monster is something that can make you weak in some type of way. when you come around certain type of people you could become weaker and that is the monster in you. you arent able to have enough will power to say no or whatever the situation is. i also believe a monster is not just in movies. there are plenty of monsters in the normal world like i believe that people that are sex predators or something to that sort are monsters because they scare people and do things that arent right also when you are around someone that is a known predator you dont act the same your not your normal self.

ReplyDeleteA monster if we look at in fiction, is a beast, a disfigured being trying to destroy someone, something, or just everything in general. In real life, I believe a monster is a person who has somehow become corrupted. Someone who has lost themselves, their morals, and their values. It’s someone who has no regret for hurting others. That, I think, is a real monster. It’s also the difference between a monster and a hero. A hero has morals and values. Hero’s are the ones fighting for a good cause.
Monsters are to some people anything that anyone has a fear of. To me i think monsters are things that people are afraid of but they dont know quite what it is. Not like those creepy things in movies that dont even exist, but rather something that spooks you but you dont know what it was and that you never know what it is because you dont really see it .

ReplyDeleteA monster is almost the complete opposite of a hero. Although I do feel there are some similarities. The same way a hero is made a villain can be made. It all comes down to a persons mind set and the path they take after their creation. With that said I guess I’m trying to say a villain has the complete opposite mind set of a hero. Also unlike most heros villans usualy have no respect for life.

ReplyDeleteI beieve a monster is something that is feared , wether it by one or many people. When i first think of a monster i think of the movie Monster's inc. or something along those lines. But once you really start to think about it, the people or things that frighten you the most, like the wierd and bad people out there, those are the real monsters.
A monster can be scary that frighten you like bullys.Your younger siblings can be monsters by destroying your room. Really anything can be a monster because everyone has diferent fears. Some monster can be friendly for example the movie monster inc.
ReplyDeleteAMBER FERGUSON =]
ReplyDeleteUmm i would say that a monster is anything that terrifies you. Something that you fear of. Monsters could also be used as a metaphor to describle someone's personality. Just because you say something is a monster doesnt necessarily mean it's a bad thing. For example, playing a sport and someone is extremely good. You could say " DANG, she's a monster!" lol but you cant really categorized a monster because different things scare different people. So yeah thats what i think.
oh yeah a monster couldnt really be a hero or thing like a hero, because what ever they are people fear them, and dont like them. Heroes on the other hand people look up to and what them to protect them in a way to an extent.. if that makes any sense. and know they dont only exist in movies or fables.
ReplyDeleteTo me a monster could be anyone who has an evil streek of sin. Wheather it be the cafeteria lady who wont give me extra gravy or my grandma who wont let me sleep at church, monsters could be anyone. The one thing that make them a monster to each individual is the fact that they feel the opposite to what you so they are wrong and they are monsters in you eyes but the thing is since you are the opposite of them doesnt that make you a monster in their eyes. The difference between monsters and heroes is that a hero feels your pain and the pain that the monster is inflicting on you and he strives to change it. A monster feels his own pain and only his own pain and does everything in his power to keep you from happiness. Monsters and heroes could be everywhere not just in movies and fables. They could be your teacher, your brother, or your best friend.
ReplyDeleteMonsters are some sort of creature or image that scares you. They look out of the ordinary from regular animals or things we've seen. Heros are there to save and protect you and monsters are there to terrorize you and make you unhappy. They can be in both movies and fables as well as in real life.
ReplyDeletea monster is some idea or concept blown out of proportion to match our inner most fears and anxieties. many of these monsters reflect the unknown. long ago, before humans understood the logic behind natural events, it was easy to create your own views as to why life is the way it is. often times the unknown is scarier than what wee believe to be real
